ASSB Shelter Support Project for Slum Poor of Dinajpur-Apon Thikana
ASSB has been worked in 22 slums in Dinajpur town and realized these slum dwellers are actually shelter less due to river erosion and migrated to Dinajpur town to get their livelihood. Mostly they are working as day laborers, rickshaw pullers, hawkers etc. but no ability to build shelter by their own and they used to take shelter on Government land, especially by the side of Roads and Railway Lines, on drains, borrow pits etc. by building bamboo structures (Bamboo pillars with Synthetic sheet on roof). But often they faced demolition of their shelter by Government as part of eviction program for unauthorized occupation of land.
To address this problem low-cost durable small shelter with a latrine and a tube well provided to the 104 families on a purchased land in the periphery of Dinajpur Town purchased from one of the founder member in installments supported by Shanti Germany started in March 2009 and completed in December, 2011. The beneficiaries also provided ten types of training for their awareness and capacity building income generating activities and family maintenance.
Project Objectives were to:
- provide low-cost durable small shelter with a latrine and a tube well
- build awareness of project beneficiaries on socio-economic condition
- build capacity on livelihood generation
- promote income generating activities through farming and Small Business (Micro Credit)
Project Outputs:
- 104 families find their home with a latrine and a tube well including well designed discharge of waste water and drainage system and three large dustbins
- About 60% members are now involved in small businesses and are earning Tk10000-15000 yearly
- About 1000 fruit and timber saplings have been planted on either side of the road in the project area.
Project Activities:
Construction of Shelter including latrine, Tube-well, Dustbins and Drainage System:
104 shelters have been built and each of the beneficiary’s families got the allotment including latrine, Tube-well, Dustbins and Drainage System that has provided healthy environment, pollution free and reduced water borne diseases and water for drinking and households purposes are available for each of the families’ due to installation of tube-well. The dustbins enhanced the neat and clean, bad odor or smell and pollution free environment and the drainage system discharged the waste water and the main drain of Apon Thikana have been connected with the drain of municipality and no water accumulates in the courtyard of the houses, no water borne disease.
Capacity Building Training:
Training on Group Account and Management-100 Group Members provided Group Account and Management training that have been able them to understand profit or loss in their business and keeping accounts in every sphere of their family life, transparency of group accounting.
Training on Income Generating Activities (IGA)-100 Group Members provided IGA training to the members who have ideas about micro business and were eager to run business and involved in clothing, grocery shop, vegetables, fire wood, paper bag making business etc. and monthly income increased by around 2000 BDT
Training on Legal Aid-99 Group members received training on Legal Aid. that created awareness of family law and dowry problem, Woman can take part in family decision making, members are capable of taking legal actions in any situation, helping the families and neighbors by advising on legal matters, they have become more law abiding than before.
Training on Women and Gender Development-100 Group Members received able them taking part in family decision making, can give their opinion in the group, relation between man and woman has improved, prevent disparity between man and woman.
Training on Health-Related Family Awareness-100 Group Members received training on Family Health Consciousness and have become much aware about family health. They are keeping their cloths, bed and surroundings neat and clean. The pregnant mothers are taking vaccine regularly and giving nutritious food to their children. They did not think about neat and cleanliness as an important matter while they lived in the slum. As they own a house now they are trying to keep it neat and clean. We can find the reflection of it.
Training on Awareness Building on Personal Hygiene and Fitness-100 Group Members received training on Awareness Building on Personal Hygiene and Fitness become aware of family health by receiving this training, careful not take stale food, careful about neat and cleanliness., conscious to cover their food stuffs.
Training on Tailoring (Young Girl)- 60 Group Members earning at their homes by taking machines and some others are earning by sewing clothes in other’s shop.
Training on Electrical (Young Boys)- 10 Young Boys received training on Electrical, Computer, Workshop and Carpentry and involved their experience in their own work and yearly income is Tk.36000-72000.
Distribution of Credit:
Credit for different small enterprises: 70 Members of Apon Thikana were supported for stabling small enterprise for increasing their income generation.
Credit for Sewing Machine: 30 Group Members received credit for purchasing sewing machine and they also provided training on tailoring and are now doing income by tailoring.
Tree plantation: 1000 sapling of both fruit and timer trees were distributed among the beneficiaries of the Apon Thikana and enhanced ecological balance and opportunity for supply of fruits and timber.
